Assignment 11 - Biddle

Cats have nine lives, Pac-Man has three lives, and radioactive isotopes have half-lives. How many lives does something else—conceptual or actual—have, and why?

Butterflies are considered to have two lives because of their metamorphosis from the form of a caterpillar to a butterfly. Now it is true that once they become butterflies they die shortly after the transition but the reason they are considered to have two lives is because they live in two completely different ways. For example while butterflies have the ability to fly and they consume nectar, caterpillars are only able to crawl and consume leaves. They also are considered by many to represent different spirits. The butterfly represents freedom and that they are deep down representations of life. The butterflies also metaphorically represent rebirth and transformation/change because of their unique life and how they are born. Many cultures look to the two variations of life created from one butterfly for hope to show that if they are in a bad place currently they can change and become like a butterfly and succeed.
