Until this year, I was never interested in politics. I thought that politics were too complex and I didn’t realize how directly it could impact me. Even during my freshman year, taking my AP U.S. Government and Politics course, I never had a clue what was happening in the world or in class. This might explain why I did poorly on the exam. It was only until earlier this year that I saw for myself how important it is to be informed. 2020 has been one dumpster fire of a year and it has opened my eyes to America’s seemingly infinite political issues. Quarantine has given me a lot of time to reflect and become educated on relevant matters in my country. My family rarely openly expresses their political opinions and at times when people would ask me about my own I would have nothing to say. I know that some of my family have different beliefs and opinions than me, and a couple years ago I blindly followed them. Now I am continuously trying to educate and prepare myself to exercise my right to vote in future elections and think for myself.
