Assignment 17- Hannah Morris

Stanley Kubrik will always hold the spot of "favorite director" in my mind, particularly for his intricate and beautiful production of The Shining in 1980. Although, while that film introduced me to his work, he has worked with some other amazing films as well.

A great film to compare Stanley Kubrik's "The Shining" to is one of his much earlier movies, "Lolita". Unlike The Shining, Lolita is of the romance genre. Going from Lolita's drama-like romance to The Shining's thrilling scares is a large, but favorable leap. I think the director thrives under anything that he can make eerily symbolistic, such as The Shining, which has been analyzed so many times through its amazing use of color theory and symbolism. Lolita, on the other hand, does not give the  director as much of a chance to do so.

The biggest difference between the director's works is the feedback the enormous feedback that The Shining received. His film will go down in history for changing the horror genre in its whole, making the cheap-jumpscare uses that were common more looked down upon when movies could produce a sense of deep uncomfortableness in the  audience. On top of this, The Shining had absolutely amazing actors that won awards because of their performances. In total, I just believe that In The Shining compared with his other  movies such as Lolita he is able to explore his strengths as a director much more.
