I'm doing the vestigiality option (imagined.)
Ever wonder why human ears look so weird? The answer is because humans actually used to have big floppy ears like some dogs or an elephant. Over time, through millions of y(ears) of evolution, they shrunk up and formed into the twisty shapes we know today. Elephants use their big ears to dissipate heat, and humans once did the same thing. Humans originated in Africa, where it is hot, so they used their big ears to let out heat. As they expanded into cooler territories and developed better cooling methods, the large ears became unnecessary, so ears shrunk. Over time the cartilage in ears folded into their modern appearance.
