El-Fadel, M., and M. Massoud. “Emissions from Landfills: A Methodology Comparative Assessment.” Environmental Technology, vol. 21, no. 9, 2000, pp. 965–978., doi:10.1080/09593332108618041.

This assessment from volume 21 of Environmental Technology, examines the effect that the management of waste in the form of landfills is having on climate change. Mutasem El-Fadel is a professor at the American University of Beirut. Mark Fathi Massoud is a professor at UC Santa Cruz. It explains how landfills contribute to climate change through the formation of methane gas. Their approach for application of estimating country wide methane gas emissions from landfills is the same as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Scientific charts and graphs are incorporated to present data in a clear and scientific manner. Ways to reduce the effects of the found results are discussed within the paper. This source is very credible and presents data in a scientific way.

“Landfills: Causes, Effects and Solutions: UBQ Materials.” UBQ, www.ubqmaterials.com/resources/landfills-causes-effects-solutions/.

This article from UBQ materials, an environment friendly company that focuses on converting bio-based thermoplastic composite for reuse, provides a basic overview of the problems surrounding landfills and the gases they emit. They cite credible sources such as the United States Environmental Protection Agency and NRDC. They clearly explain the dangers of gases emitted from landfills in a way that is easy to understand. This allows them to present possible solutions to the issue. There is a bias in the article, because at the end they explain the goal of their company and include a link to contact them. The facts they present are done so in a way to recruit others to their cause.

Newton, John. “The Effects of Landfills on the Environment.” Sciencing, 2 Mar. 2019, sciencing.com/effects-landfills-environment-8662463.html.

This article explains the many different ways in which landfills negatively affect the environment. They cite credible sources such as the EPA and Romanian Ministry of Environment and Forests. Not only do they explain how landfills affect climate change and pollution, but other areas of importance such as soil fertility and biodiversity. This improves the article by explaining multiple different ways landfills are a problem, however not much detail or depth is given for any one subject, weakening the article. No solutions are presented in the article either.

Renou, S., et al. “Landfill Leachate Treatment: Review and Opportunity.” Journal of Hazardous Materials, vol. 150, no. 3, 2008, pp. 468–493., doi:10.1016/j.jhazmat.2007.09.077.

This scientific article from the Journal of Hazardous Materials focuses on landfill leachate treatments. Leachate is liquid that passes through landfills and leaches dissolved and suspended materials from the landfill. All of the authors work at the Department of Nuclear Technology, Atomic Energy Commission of Cadarache in France. By focusing specifically on leachate treatments the article is able to more clearly define better ways to handle part of the problem surrounding the negative effects of landfills on the environment. The paper uses scientific charts and graphs to clearly present ideas and data. There is no bias within the paper because it is purely scientific and seeks to review leachate treatments without an opinion.
